The Geometry and Symbolism of a Cosmati Pavement
Geometric patterns are used in the artworks of various different spiritual and religious traditions around the world. However, they will often present themselves in a decorative style that is particular to each tradition or geographical region. One such decorative style goes under the name of ‘Cosmatesque’ and originates from medieval Italy. Cosmatesque or ‘cosmati’ patterns are used primarily in floor tiling but also sometimes as wall decoration. Despite being found mostly in Italy there is a famous example of a ‘Cosmati pavement’ in Westminster Abbey in London, England. This square pavement has been used in the English coronation ceremony since the thirteenth century.
In this course we will draw beautiful geometric patterns found in the Cosmati pavement. We shall also contemplate the spiritual meaning of ‘Cosmos’ and how this presents itself within the use of the Westminster Cosmati pavement in the coronation ceremony.
A cosmati floor was designed by E. Hutton and created at Buckfast Abbey, in Devon, which we intend to visit during the weekend.
